You have to realize and admit to yourself that you are a sinner and then you need to admit this to God.

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
ROMANS 6:23

After you realize and admit to yourself that you are a sinner, you then have to know that the consequences of sin is death and that the only way to have eternal life is to accept the gift of eternal life through God’s son Jesus Christ our Lord.
